Question: My 37 year old son is having delusions and grandiose thinking. He is emailing
XXXXXXX XXXX, XXXX, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX etc announcing his engagement to a girl he has never met except in his mind. At age 20 he had a drug induced psychotic episode. He was put on Risperdal for six weeks. His psychiatrist that he was not psychotic but had a drug induced psychosis. Now 17 years later he lost his high paying job two years ago and his dog died three months ago and all the full blown symptoms have returned. He is "normal" 95% of the time. He is single and lives alone. It is at night that he sends these confusing emails. He refuses to go to a doctor. I think if he knew he could get this shot outside of the hospital, he would go for it and then have the presence of mind to see a psychiatrist on a regular basis.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

These certainly sound like psychotic episodes he is having. Given that they are episodic, they may be substance induced. Unfortunately involuntary mental health treatment can only happen if he goes to the emergency room. If he becomes psychotic again, and is doing dangerous things, the best thing to do is call 911 so he can be brought to an ER and potentially treated.

My husband was taken off a breathing tube after having a critical illness. He was given risperdal. His was getting better the first 2 days and than went down hill high fever, non responsive and when they went to put the breathing tube back in they found a build up of flem in his throat. In my opinion it was the fault of the risperdal and improper mouth care from the caregivers. What is your opinion on reisperdal?
Should he have been left on risperdal for 5 days after tube removal?

my 10yr old son 4ft6in 114lb dx hfa, odd, anxiety, adhd meds - concerta 36mg, celexa 40mg, risperdal .5mg x2, trileptal 300mg x2 vitamins - d3 1000iu, fish oil my son has been on all meds except trileptal for years. trilepal was added three months ago. his appetite has always been greater than expected for a child his age and with the introduction of risperdal it increased even more. now with the trileptal my son wants to eat from the moment he wakes up to the moment he goes to sleep. yesterday i figured up his caloric intake. it was over 3,500 calories. i try to offer good foods but these are rebuffed for the chicken nuggetts and corndogs that i keep for snacks. my concern is that he may be developing diabetes or something related. i have had his fasting blood sugar and a1c checked. i was told it was ok but to me the numbers were borderline for a child. sugar was 187 and a1c was 5.8 just trying to get another physicians view thanks, michelle YYYY@YYYY

My son has been diagnosed with being bipolar, and is presently in jail for a repeat effence. It was only clinically diagnosed last year, and I think we all should of done more homework on the disorder, and not leave it all up to him. He is a great person, who is always helping others. But then comes the insomnia and the manic episodes which are not so nice. Is being bipolar having a chemical imbalance in your brain which at one time was treated with lithieum as the drug of choise? Why the change to risperdal, and is it safe? He was doing better with the risperdal, but then became scared when the commercial came out about it and discontinued taking it. Totally bad idea. My nephew 32, Father of 2 small children and beautiful wife shot himself last year in their home. this was after a year from hell as he spiraled out of control. He made threats that he was going to take everyone to heaven with him. Does a overwhelming situation in a persons life have any bearring as to the onset of the over the top manic episodes. Because this was a man who had been the salt of the earth type of guy. but he did refuse any medication in treating the disorder, which left him with alot of nights of insomnia. ??chemical imbalance??med??event??

I have epilepsy and schizophrenia. I was currently taking 1mg in the morning and 1mg at night of clonozepam and I noticed myself getting better after I took myself off of another medicine. Now I am having seizures and thoughts again. I weigh 145 pounds and I take risperdal, lamictal, and tegretol. I was wondering if it would be dangerous to increase my dosage to 2mg in the morning and at night. Would this be dangerous?
