Suggest Remedies For Umbilical Hernia

Question: Hello, I have an Umbilical hernia i have had for about 5 years, it has got larger in the past 3 months from about 5.08 cm round to 7.62 across to 5.08 from top to bottom, it has not bothered me much, i am obese at 201lb's. today it has become sore around the perimeter to one side but not on the hernia itself, i have felt soreness before when i think food was passing through it, i suffer with constipation due to taking co-codamol 4 daily and use laxatives daily, it does seem to be reducible but most of my obesity is on my stomach area, so it is difficult as a lay person to tell, i have tried lying down and pushing it in which is sore but not hugely painful, but definitely more sore than yesterday, about a 4 on the pain scale, My stomach also seems more bloated today, do you think i may be in danger of it becoming incarcerated in the near future, should i see the emergency services at the hospital today, or avoid food? it has not changed color, but it does feel different than usual . thank you for your time best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
Incarceration is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your hernia is pretty large. So usually the risk of strangulation or incarceration is low in case of such large hernias. However, hernia is always unpredictable and it always is possible.
Typical symptoms of incarceration are bloating, inability to pas gas (very important symptom), stool obstruction, nausea, vomiting. Abdominal pain (cramping) is also very common.
If you have at least two of mentioned symptoms, please visit ER. Please also check your heart rate. If its more than 100/minute, please visit ER.
Otherwise, you may wait and see. Avoiding food is not a solution. Either there is obstruction or not. If we assume that there is no obstruction, you can eat. If we assume there is, you should go to ER (and avoid the food).

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
