Umbilical hernia

What is Umbilical hernia?

Congenital umbilical hernia is a congenital malformation of the navel (umbilicus). Among adults, it is three times more common in women than in men; among children, the ratio is roughly equal. It is also found to be more common in children of African descent. An acquired umbilical hernia directly results from increased intra-abdominal pressure caused by obesity, heavy lifting, a long history of coughing, or multiple pregnancies.

Hi dear,
Thanks for your query to health care magic. Vomiting after feeding is a common phenomena for babies. Its called reflux. As long as your baby is feeding well, gaining weight well he probably is a happy spitter. We need not worry much about vomiting. Burping your child for atleast 15-20...

My son is 3 years old and has a midline separation, his pediatrician called it an umbilical hernia, but its more of a midline ridge when he strains to sit up. He is now experiencing pain with any amount of pressure applied to the linea alba. Even when he's sleeping if I run my finger down his abdomen he winces and curls into a ball while he's sleeping. Is surgery necessary at this point? We have been referred to a general surgeon, I am just getting anxious and looking for information. Thank you.

Umbilical hernia persisting till this age requires surgical correction.

If it is not corrected, the size will increase and there is a rare possibility of strangulation of underlying intestines it they are entrapped into hernia sac.

Male, 63 years old, 5 10 , Aprox. 183 lbs.: I had an umbilical hernia surgery September 10, 2012. I have gained so much weight that I can not get into any of my good slacks. The surgery was a workman s comp surgery. The company s primary care physician set me up with one surgeon. Assuming that I needed to take some control, I insisted on a second opinion and went with the 2nd surgeon recommend by the insurance company (who may not have been any better than the first). The surgeon who performed the my hernia operation was not too communicative. I asked him if I shouldn t have some physical therapy and he said I don t need physical therapy.I think it would have been good to have had some help from a therapist, strengthening my core (back and abs). I don t know why I have gained so much weight, unless I was favoring myself. It is hard for me now, to bend over, to get down and get back up. Puttin on my socks and shoes id difficult. Is there physical therapy for umbilical hernia surgery?

doctor1 MD

Hi ! Your gain in weight may not be related to the umbilical hernia surgery, but could just be a coincidence. You must get yourself reviewed by your GP for a possible blood sugar test, thyroid function test. If both are normal, I would suggest you to visit an endocrinologist. At the same time, I...

my husband has something that is popping out of his abdomen just below his left ribcage, he has had an umbilical hernia mesh surgery and I suspect it may be a tear in the mesh... however he also has high blood pressure and we are afraid of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

doctor1 MD

Hello and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your concern.
Umbilical hernia surgery is done only around the umbilicus.
A swelling popping out below left rib cage, can't be related to that surgery.
A tear in the umbilical mesh,if wide, can cause a swelling in that area only.
High...

I have had pain in my right testicle for two months. It is slightly swollen. I assumed it was because of my small inguinal hernia that I have had for years. I just saw a doctor who thought it could be epididymitis so I am taking antibiotics and an anti-inflamatory medication. I also saw the hernia surgeon and he thinks the inguinal hernia is small but recommends surgery on the umbilical hernia. Would an umbilical hernia cause pain in my testicle? I have a small (pea size) bulge above my belly button. The pain there is tied to the pain in my testicle and can persist for a month or two. It feels like a rope is tied between the two. If I push on the umbilical hernia I sometime feel pain to the tip of my penis. It is getting better now, either because of the medication or just due to time. I can't decide whether to do an umbilical hernia surgery. Part of me wants to wait and see how the antibiotics work, but I also would like to just get
