Question: Good morning Dr Rynne. I have had sinus congestion since Christmas. Head always feels full. Some pressure under and above eyes. No known allergies. Have used saline spray, netti pot and decongestants. Temporary relief. Now experiencing some upper chest tightness. It is worse when prone.

That sounds miserable.

I would suggest adding a nasal corticosteroid such as Flonase, which is sold without prescription now. Don't use it within an hour or two of the nettipot/saline sprays though as it will not be effective and just end up going down your throat.

If you are starting to get tightness in your breathing though, you should go in to be seen by a doctor to have your lungs listened to. You may need an inhaler.

If you have discolored nasal mucus or sputum and if that doesn't clear up after you have been out of bed for awhile, you may need an antibiotic as well.

If you smoke cigarettes, now would be the time to quit as it can delay infection resolution.

So... it's time to go in to be checked out; and also add Flonase.
