Suggest Medical Tests To Rule Out Herpes

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Apr 2016
Question: I have recently been tested for Herpes and the blood work came back positive for type 1 and negative for type 2. I had unprotected oral sex about 7 or 8 months ago. I have an inflammation on the end of my ureatha (msp) and it has itch and have had a few pains inside the shaft. Not normal. No discharge just inflamed at the opening and feel like I have something inserted in my top or end of the ureatha inside. Urinating is not uncomfortable, not painful but some pain at times doesn't kill me. I have noticed that I have to urinate often or more than usual. I had the area swabbed yesterday and they told me it was negative. I want to know is there a procedure I can go to a urologist and have him scope or review, etc. to see if I have herpes type 1 growing inside my penis. Where I had it swabbed is a confidential std testing center I don't know the doctor. He called it Balantis and UTI. I did test UTI a week or so ago using a home over the counter AHO brand I think and it showed nothing. I just want to make sure I do not have Herpes going on in my Penis that could pass to my partner. I understand type 1 is oral but the unprotected oral sex I had has me concerned. Can a urologist test put this to rest for me and if so what is the process

This has been going on for about 22 to 25 days.

Brief Answer:
Here is a list of investigations you can request for to clear your doubts

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Although you already know, I would like to emphasise that not only has your HSV-2 testing reported a negative result, but along with that you do not have any symptoms of HSV-2, and also the AHO brand test that showed nothing. This cumulatively itself should suffice to allow you to adequately rule HSV-2 out.

There are 3 methods of testing for HSV-2, and they are:

+Blood test: Looks for HSV antibodies to confirm/rule out the infection
+Viral culture: Tissue sample or scraping from the sores
+PCR test: Also involve taking DNA samples from sores

So you can speak to a urologist for these investigations, along with a 'urine culture and sensitivity examination' which will provide information on:

+Confirmation of an infection in your urinary tract
+Confirm the infection-causing organism: This will be the most important piece of information for us, as it will help us confirm the type of infection you have, which will help us to either confirm/rule out herpes
+And provide information on which medications would be best to treat the infection

I hope I have provided you with enough information you need. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

What I am asking is this can I contract Type 1 Herpes through oral sex in my groin/penis. since I tested negative for Type 2. Is there any way I could have Type 1 Herpes in my penis as a result of unprotected oral sex 7 or 8 months ago. I am wondering what to ask I know that Type 1 is a cold sores usually around the mouth. Could I have gotten a cold sore in my ureatha (msp) associated with type 1 Herpes and eventually pass that to my partner. Just getting this inflammation/irritation has me concerned. Is the urine test you mentioned above good for that and can I get confirmation that this flare up I have is not type 1 herpes in my penis. Just want to see a specialist that knows and what to ask them. Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The only irritated and inflamed areas is my end of the penis gland/ureatha opening very tender and red. Feel like I have a knot in the top of my penis, some itching and an a sharp pain like someone is sticking me with a needle all inside my penis shaft up at the penis gland head. No sores or irritation on the shaft, skin groin itself just the end of the ureatha and inside.

Not a constant pin or needle not constant itch, just uncomfortable, and my underwear irritates it.
Sorry for carrying on

Brief Answer:
Yes, oral sex received from person with open sores can cause genital herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

You can get genital herpes from oral sex if the person providing oral sex has open sores of HSV-1.

I understand what you are trying to ask sir, yes HSV-1 can cause genital herpes; in fact almost 30-40 % of genital herpes is caused by oral sex from HSV-1.

The urine tests I recommended will help to either confirm/rule out other infections, which can then pave our path towards suspecting HSV-1 genital herpes, or ruling it out.

The inflamed/irritated regions in your urethra or penis can also be caused by a UTI sir, which is why I am not primarily suspecting HSV-1 to be the cause for your presentation, but that doesn't mean I am ruling it out, it is of course possible.

Yes sir, the knot, shape pain, etc; are all also possible with a UTI.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
