Is Pregnancy Possible Through Withdrawal Method?

Question: Hello Doctor,

Hope you are doing fine. Happy New Year!

I have a question. I had unprotected sex with my partner yesterday but he ejaculated outside but still I doubt whether some ejaculation has happened inside as well. My periods date is on 11th. Are there chances to get pregnant? If yes, please advise me the measures to avoid pregnancy. Contraceptive pills are hard to find in Dubai and I guess the doctors here do not recommend. But I'm not sure about this. Please advise.

Wish you a very happy, joyful, healthy and peaceful new year.

If you have regular 28 days cycle, pregnancy is extremely unlikely with the unprotected sex that you had yesterday. Since there is always a possibility of late ovulation I suggest that you take emergency contraception at the earliest to avoid the chance unwanted pregnancy.

Just find out if emergency contraceptives like Plan B one step, next choice one dose and Take action are available in Dubai. Plan B is available inKuwait. So it must be available in Dubai. These tablets need to be used as single dose at the earliest to be more effective ( though can be used within 5 days of unprotected sex).

If the above emergency contraceptive pills are not available as far as my knowledge goes one of the following contraceptive pills which can be used as emergency contraception will be available in Dubai.

1. Microval--Take 50 tablets as single dose
2. Neogynon--Two active pills now and two tablets after 12 hours
3. Logynon(yellow tablets) / Microgynon/ Nordette--Four pills now and 4 pills after 12 hours

Miss Rxxxxxxxx to avoid this unnecessary stress may I suggest that you start regular contraception from your nest cycle.

I have a regular menstrual cycle and have never had any history of delayed or missed periods.

I will check with the pharmacy here regarding the medicines as advised by you. I don't know whether they would ask a prescription. But I will check and will advise you shortly.

If you do not find any of the tablets that I have mentioned, get any oral contraceptive pill that contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel and write to me. I shall advise you regarding how it needs to be taken.

I just went to a pharmacy now and got Yaz tablets. Is this safe?

You have one more option. Get copper IUCD inserted at the earliest. It acts as emergency contraception and can be continued as regular contraception.

Oh no! I will search in some other pharmacy then. Copper IUCD can purchased easily here? Please advise.

Also, what is the maximum time whereby I can have the contraceptive pills? Am I too late? It is not 24 hours since we had the intercourse. Please advise.

Yes. Copper IUD can be purchased easily.

You need to use emergency contraception within five days of unprotected sex. It's greatest efficacy is when used within 24 hours of unprotected sex.

Again I am repeating. If they do not have the pills that I have mentioned, ask them to give any oral contraceptive pill that contains ethynyl estradiol and levonorgestrel.
