Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Oral Contraceptive?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: Don't know where to start. Me and wife had a torn-condom intercourse and then within 10 hours she took 4 pills of Marvelon and took 4 more pills 12 hours later.
Her last period started 4th Feb 2016
We had abovementioned intercourse on 29th Feb 2016
It's 5th March 2016 but she hasnt had her periods yet.

Please advice at your earliest.

Note: We're in the UAE where Emergency Contraceptives are not available. We went for Marvelon because thats the only one available here.
Note: my wife is abit overweight and have 3 kids via normal delivery.

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy. Wait upto 1 wk for period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) MARVELON is a regular combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) which contains ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel as active ingredients. It is NOT an emergency pill but can be used for that purpose also when no other alternative pill is available in your local area. It was RIGHT choice.

2) You did unprotected sex (due to torn condom) in SAFE period (last week of regular cycle is extremely safe) and took those pill (with proper dose) within first 24 hrs of sex. It will give more than 95% extra protection against unwanted pregnancy. In this case, her chance of pregnancy is extremely RARE or NIL.

3) Her expected period date may be delayed for 1-2 weeks due to hormonal imbalance (due to effect of those pills), mental stress, pelvic infection, weight change, irregular diet pattern etc.

I suggest her to await at least 1 week to get period naturally. If she DOESN'T get it by this time, she may need to take Norethisterone pill for 3 to 5 days to induce period. Be stress free, control body weight and maintain genital hygiene.

Hope I have answered your query. Wish her good health and take care.

Hi Doctor!

Thanks for your answer.

She followed your exact suggestions. So, she waited rch for the periods but didn't get it so far. So as recommended she took medicine MARVELON (10mg tab), she took one tablet on night on 12th March, we are not sure about the dosing, so....
-What should be the dosage of this pill? Should she take one tablet (10mg) everyday or twice daily, and for how many days or if periods starts, she should stop taking them?
-The brouchure inside the medicine pack says this is used for stopping or delaying periods? Are we using the right medicine?
-We are also a little concerned about the period cycle, because we have had a booked holiday plan at end of the month, if periods happen during that time, the whole trip will be spoiled. Would it be possible for you to tell us roughly when should she expect her periods to commence, so that we could amend our trip accordingly?
-Should she do a pregnency test because it has been about 10 days beyond her period cycle? 4th Feb was her last period commencing date as mentioned before We are worried.
Correction to my last post... not marvelon, she took NEROTHISTERONE

Thanks in advance for your valuable advice.

Brief Answer:
Norethisterone pill should be taken in right dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query. Followings are my comments:

1) Usual dose of the Norethisterone pill is 5 mg thrice daily for 3-5 days. She will get withdrawal bleeding like period within 3 to 7 days after cessation of the medicine.

2) Yes, this medicine can be used in both purpose (to delay and induce period). You have nothing to worry about that.

3) Period CAN'T be predicted by any means when it is induced by pill. However, roughly, if she takes the pills for 5 days with proper dose (from today), she can expect her period within 20-25th March.

4) Yes, she can undergo one home pregnancy test to clear doubt though it was safe sex (No chance of pregnancy). Review with test result.

Hope, I have clarified all things. She must be stress free (otherwise period will be more delayed). Do meditation or yoga in the morning for 15-20 min.

Good luck and take care.
