Is Mononucleosis Contagious After 1 Week Of Proper Treatment?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: I am 38 yes old and was diagnosed with mono 7 days ago. I just finished the prescribed steroids. I spent the 1st 2 days in bed and then felt fine except for some minor fatigue. I haven't had anymore, sore throat, fever, sweats, or headaches. I went back to work and resumed normal activity . When can I kiss my husband and three kids (2,3,12yrs old) and when can I have a glass of wine :) ?

Brief Answer:
Complicated issue, see longe answer

Detailed Answer:
Dear ptient,

the situation with mono and being contagious is complex:

It is said to take precautions for about 1-2 months after first infection with kissing, since then the most virus numbers are still found in blood and saliva. BUT: 95% of the people have mono virus lifelong in them with no symptoms so the risk of being contaminated is pretty much always there from almost anybody and that for lifelong, but most peole dont even have symptoms from it. Your husband also might have had it already and then he should be "immune" anyways, that can be foud out by blood test. So you might kiss your husband ans kids anyways and not wait for several months with that information provided now or do a blood test for him first. With the glass of whine i would wait a few more days/ a week.

Hope this is helping you, best regards
