Is It Safe To Stop Taking Losartan Due To Low BP?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015
Question: I am taking Losartan 50mg, divided in half, once in the morning, once at night. My blood pressure dips dangerously low around 11:00a.m. (74/45) almost every day. I want to quit. Is it safe?

Brief Answer:
It is safe

Detailed Answer:
Greetings, Mrs. XXXX! Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

It is a good thing that you take Losartan divided in half, rather than a full dosage, once a day, because it provides a better effect span throughout a day, and also sometimes, like in your case, appears this kind of problem. If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, then I would recommend that you remove the nighttime dosage only and continue taking the other half in the morning. My opinion is that these episodes will subside, but I also suggest that you measure your blood pressure during daytime, also.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. Should you have follow-up questions regarding this concern, I would be happy to help.

Wish you a good health,
Dr. Meriton

Thank you for your advice Dr. Meriton. I will continue with the morning half tablet, dispense with the night dose and monitor the results. Do you know if this is a common problem with this drug, and if so, is there an alternative that might be effective and more stable in its effect? I also have oral lichen planus, and there are some blood pressure medications that interact badly with this, including those with a diuretic component. Your advice will be much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
You are welcome; no interaction known.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again, Mrs. XXXX! Thank you for your follow-up question.

No interaction is known between angiotensin receptor blockers and lichen planus, prvoided by evidence and by my own experience. I think that 25 mg a day, taken in the morning, will suffice. It is also a safe and effective class of blood pressure-lowering drugs.

Feel free to ask again. If you do not have any further clarifications, I kindly ask you to close the discussion and rate the answer.

Thank you and best regards,
Dr. Meriton

Thank you once again Dr. Meriton. This morning was the second morning I took only the 1/2 pill, and the blood pressure "crash" was much less, and for a much shorter period of time. If, as you suggest, this problem will subside, I will maintain on this approach. You have provided me with much relief!
