Is It Risky To Get Pregnant When Diagnosed With Abnormal Thyroid Levels?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jun 2016
Question: Hi doctor, hope you well. I'm on the last pill pack, regarding my thyroid I wanted to ask you that is it risky to get pregnant if thyroid levels are not normal? Is it safer to get a thyroid test done first then leave the pill ? Or is it okay to leave it as long as I'm taking it everyday? I plan on leaving the pill pack by next month inshaaaallah and then control using other methods / naturally. However incase the other methods don't work then does it pose a risk?

Brief Answer:
Normal values should be there before pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXX, how are you doing?
Thyroid has no relation with birth control pills.
You should get your hormone levels tested before starting planning for pregnancy.
You should definitely take adequate precautions before entering pregnancy.
All the best.

Basically doctor I live in Malawi and the medical here is not very good as blood results and all is not very accurate. We normally go to South XXXXXXX to do blood results and visit the doctors there. InshaaAllah we are planning to go to South XXXXXXX end of April for a routine check up.

In accordance to the pills and thyroid, what I meant is that by me taking the pills it's preventing pregnancy however if I leave the pill after this pack I don't have the proper facility to get a thyroid test done. For example, I can leave the pill but I could get pregnant and my thyroid may not be normal. So would it be more safer to take the pill for an extra month and then get thyroid checked then leave the pill?

Brief Answer:
Take pill pack for another month

Detailed Answer:
Now I can understand the motive behind your pill intake and concern for thyroid.
Yes dear you should take the pill pack for another month in case this is the scenario as thyroid levels are very important in until few weeks of pregnancy and more important in first time pregnant patients so you should take the pill pack for another month so as to enter pregnancy in euthyroid state.
All the best from my side.

Ok that's fine. We have a diagnostic lab here however it's not very accurate. Il find out if they do thyroid and if they do it, then il get it done. Although the accuracy is not on point, we can still see a rough figure of the approximate thyroid level.
One more thing im always feeling very tired and weak. Even though im eating healthy.. I take thyroid first thing in the morning I'm just always drowsy or feel weak and don't feel like ding anything

Brief Answer:
Precautions advised

Detailed Answer:
These symptoms are commonly seen in patients with deranged thyroid levels and in low Hemoglobin.
Increase your protein intake by taking more of non veg and less of carbohydrates along with paneer and pulses.
Get complete blood count and thyroid hormone levels when possible.
In general take up some daily activity like walk, aerobics or gym as these will increase your basal metabolic rate and help in these symptoms also

Ok thank you doctor. I wanted to ask the thyroid test do I take it without taking medication or do I take it in the morning and then do the test?

Answered by Dr. Manisha Jain (33 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Take the dose as before

Detailed Answer:
Take your routine morning dose and take the test as this test tells the levels of thyroid hormone control of last 6-8 weeks and not related to acute level of hormones in body.
All the best.
