Brief Answer: Yes,it can be dangerous if it is obstructed. Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to XXXXXXX Yes, it can be dangerous if it is obstructed. Firstly, type of hernia should be confirmed whether it is sliding or Paraesophageal type.Sliding type is the most common type and it is considered safe whereas Paraesophageal type is prone to obstruction. In Paraesophageal type, stomach or part of intestine gets herniated inside the thoracic cavity and there is chance of strangulation. Patient presents with vomiting, not passing stool and gas. It is an acute emergency and patient need surgery. Surgery is also required in severe GERD in either type of hernia not controlled by medicines. Now a days,Laparoscopic surgery is done. Beside this,Patient should take care of general things like optimum weight, quitting smoking and alcohol, take dinner 3-4 hours before sleep, take food in small quantity, Avoid fatty and spicy food,Slightly elevated level of head during sleep etc. Get well soon.
