Brief Answer:
Person is least contagious after 3rd week

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand our concern for genital herpes in our boy friend.

To clarify about above let you know the medical facts regarding herpes:

Herpes is a viral infection which occurs at two places. One at lips and the other is at genital areas. Both the places herpes lesions manifest itself as small vesicles (fluid filled blisters) which remains for a day or two and then forms very shallow ulcers which heals in next 5-7 days.

The person is most contagious from the day of formation of vesicles till complete healing. IN genital herpes this contagious nature is only for the part of unprotected intercourse and not for casual touch, hug or gentle kiss.

It is now 3 weeks since the eruptions so the most contagious part is almost over. Though very small amount of viruses can be shed but are almost negligible.

There is lot of concern regarding herpes and I quite often see and counsel couples with one partner positive for Herpes. As long as the affected partner is taking prophylactic antiviral tablet and there is proper use of condoms then the chances of getting herpes is least likely.

I have seen so many couple where one partner is positive since many years and by using proper protective measures the other partner is not affected at all.

Herpes is very simple type of viral infection and never cause any big problem except for its recurrence. There is so much of fear regarding this condition that people sometimes makes issue of life and death- which actually should not be at all!!!

Many time patients ask me about its recurrence problem and occurring again and again in life. I simply counsel them with an example of "common flu". For flu also there is no permanent medicine and we can get it any time now and then like herpes.

Even sometimes I see that patient himself/herself feel so much of guilt regarding herpes that it becomes a major issue of life.

So your partner requires proper love and affection form you with the only precaution to have safer sex with condoms.

My all best wishes for your great relationship!!!

Hope the informations will help you, if you have any further query I will be happy to help.
