Is Blood Pressure Value Of 130/80 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Aug 2015
Question: Hi! My blood pressure is 130/80 roughly but used to be 145/90 from October 2014 until march 2015 for which Ive taken lissinopril initially and after valsartan. Now Im out of meds since. I have had occasionally pulsating headache on the left side over the ear area that comes and goes, left ear pressure and pain, unbalanced on left foot and a sensation like walking on clouds. Feel arthritis like pain on the cage, arm or palm of my left hand or fingers and this gets worse when is bad weather. My concern are heart palpitations which started after using valsartan and wont go away since. Palpitations feel mostly like a drop of the chest while bending left or rising left arm or sometimes talking loudly or while sitting in the couch and bending to reach something on the table. Rarely I feel heart racing while I was ioning and feel clammy skin. Im very concerned and Id appreciate any advise or help. Changed doctor and waiting on the new doctor appointment

Hi and thank you for asking again!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

You are reporting to have recently a BP 130/80 mmHg which is within upper limits of the norm. My opinion is that you don't need to take medications to keep BP under controls.

If you were my patient I would recommend to normalize your BP with healthy lifestyle and diet. These measures will help to keep BP under control without any side effects (unwanted effects). The recommended measures are as follows:
- Reduce salt and alcohol intake
- Quit smoking
- Increase physical activities
- Eat a healthy diet reach in fresh fruits and vegetables, poor in animal fats and diary.
- Add Omega 3 fish oils supplements
- Avoid unnecessary stress.

After reviewing your symptom they are typical for inner ear (ENT) problems or cervical spondiloarthritis. This is why I would like to suggest to contact an ENT specialist and a rheumatologist for a proper evaluation of your symptoms.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!

Thanks Dr Shehu. I understand your opinion about two possible diagnosis such is Ent or cervical spondyloarthritis. I read on line about them and their symptoms. I think one symptom that both these diseases or conditions don't have is heart palpitations and that throws me off. Want to make sure is not the heart. Although I ran, walk, ride a bicycle, work in my car which would require use of force and endurance and I don't have problems. I feel the palps when Im calm or not in stress. Last night I came home and was leaning on my left side the couch watching a movie. When I turned my heart skipped and starting racing for few seconds making me panicking and coughing to regulate the heart and I felt clammy but not out of breath. I was feeling shoulder, cage and arm like arthritis stabbing pain all kind of panicking thoughts until I fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning there were no symptoms at all. So after I wrote the first question I worked in my yard showeling and cleaning until I was tired and no symptoms of anything. Now Im resting and got a chance to write this answer. Thank you again

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Palpitations and tachycardia is a rare side effects of valsartan. Moreover stress, and laying on the left side of the bed may make palpitations and tachycardia to seem worse than they really are.

However in order to properly evaluate your heart conditions ( and to relieve your concerns ) I would like to suggest the following examinations:
- ecg
- cardiac echo
- holter monitoring
- stress test

This examinations will definitely exclude any cardiac problems. If all these examinations will be normal than palpitations are more likely related to stress and anxiety.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
