Is Garcinia Cambogia Intake Safe For Weight Loss?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014
Question: Hello: I'm a rheumatoid arthritis patient, taking all the standard meds; enbrel, arthrotech, prednisone (2mg), methotrexate, I'd like to start taking garcinia cambogia to loose the last 10lbs that won't leave me (I currently weight 125lbs, 5'3" height). Is this safe to do for me?I also take 20mg of lisinopril daily and a baby aspirin every other day, will any of that pose a problem either?

Brief Answer: No clear cut evidence is yet available Detailed Answer: Dear Friend. Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern. Recently, this drug has gained a lot of publicity due to it's use for weight loss, but let me tell you very clearly that till date there is no standard research trial, which has found it to be effective for weight loss. Moreover, it's long term side effects are still not known as we come to know about the long term side effects of any drug after a long period of time. So, in future we would be able to know that. At present, it is considered to be safe. No data is available with its interaction with any drugs, even the ones you are using. I personally don't recommend using it for weight loss, as it has not a certain drug for that purpose. So, why to take risk, when you are already on so many medications. Additionally, weight gain in your case can also be due to chronic use of steroids like prednisolone. In that condition garcinia cambogia is unlikely to help you. I would suggest you to go for safer and better alternatives for weight loss like exercising and diet modification. This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any query you may please ask me. Stay Healthy. Dr Anshul Varshney , MD
