How To Increase Weight Of A Child?

Posted on Thu, 10 Apr 2014
Question: Doctor, My daughter's birth weight is 3.0 and until the first year she was gradually gaining weight as per the chart. She was one level below the medium percentile. But after one year, she slowly started coming down to the bottom most of the percentile and she still continues the same. We have consulted with multiple doctors on this but I always get the same response "ignore the weight as long as the kid is active and gaining the height it should be fine". :) I am still not convinced because she will be going to school from XXXXXXX and I wanted to make sure she is healthy before that. Till date we have tried all the possibilities with the food items like NonVeg, PediaSure, Fruits, etc. The only option I could think of is the additional supplement. Please suggest. Right now her height is 94cm, weight 12kg and age is 3 years 3 months.

Brief Answer: Try iron and multivitamin Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for writing to healthcare magic. Generally growth slows between 1 to 3 years compared to the first year. Your child is in the normal range of growth . Health is judged by activeness, free from infections and height rather than weight. If your child's growth chat curve is not flat , no need to worry. Keep trying all kinds of food. Avoid junk foods. Continue pediasure. Try iron and multivitamins for atleast 6 months. Deworm every 6 months. Typical indian home food is the best balanced food you can give to your child Wishing your child good health. Regards Dr Arun

Doctor, Thank you for the quick and detailed reply. Could you please suggest some good and standard Iron and Multivitamin? My present doctor doesn't suggest anything, hence I raised this question itself. Thank you for your time. Regards, XXXX
