How To Get An Accurate Semen Analysis Done?

Question: Hello, My husband had a varicocelcetomy in 2/2012 in order for us to have a better chance to have a baby. His sperm count was4 x 10 6 power, vol 4.5ml . We went to fertility doctor and had another test they said he now has none, maybe 2. Please advise.

Brief Answer: Please get a second report of Semen Analysis Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for choosing wwwhealthcaremagic.com Single semen analysis may some times not tell us the truth. so I suggest to get a repeat of semen analysis from a good independent pathology lab after abstaining for 3-4 days. The sample should be produced by masturbation with in the lab and be careful not to spill any drop of semen outside ,esp. the initial part of spurt because it contains 75% of the total sperms. Hello! Did you receive the report. Do you think another test is worth while after they found only 2 the last test? and or should we consider a sperm donor?

Brief Answer: Please get serum FSH level Detailed Answer: Hello You can consider sperm donor any time but before that , let us find out the realistic chance of recovery . I have gone through the reports but not found the report of FSH level of your husband. That is an indication of the capacity of testes to manufacture sperms, even after operation. He is a smoker and has diabetes as well. A serum FSH level of more than 12 iu/litre tells you a very compromised capacity and a further increase will indicate poor outcome of the surgery . Diabetes and Smoking history further reduces the risk of recovery. so I think the chances of recovery or improvement of sperm count were not great any way. Still the final semen count is deducted after 2 tests because there is a high chance of a false result in a single report. If previously it was not done, please get a serum FSH level of your husband. Thank you for the information. FSH test is known by a Blood test?? We found it interesting, he has never been told he has diabetes. What helped you to determine the diabetes? We will watch his sugar intake now. The Doctor that did the last semen test that said my husband only had 2. Recommended a test that he was to use baking soda 3 x prior to seeing them and they would test his urine. Then they would do another semen test. That Doctor indicated that he has a retrograde ejaculation from the surgery. Please advise if these test are also recommended or should we just start with the FSH test first?

Brief Answer: Please get FSH level Detailed Answer: Hello Varicocelectomy doesn't cause reterograde ejaculation. FSH helps you determine the reserve capacity of testes to produce sperms so it is extremely important. You should discuss with his treating doctor about this test. I reviewed the reports and it mentioned family history of diabetes. I apologies for misinterpretation it. But it is good idea to check his fasting blood sugar if it wasn't tested earlier in this back ground and with positive family history. Please discuss about sugar tests too.
