How Long Does Recovery From A Liver Abscess Take?
Question: 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with liver access of 6 cm by biopsy and ct scan with contrast and spent 6 days in hospital taking iv antibiotics. I got released and have been taking flaggyl 500mg 4 times a day and 750 mg of leviquin once daily. 10 days ago I had another Ct scan with contrast and it was down to 2 cm. I saw the surgeon 3 days ago and he said the antibiotics were working and will do a ultrasound scan next week and thinks it will be gone by then. He said no surgery. My main question is I feel much better but still feel blah/bad mostly at night? Malaise just not right and feel a little sick with some nausea? I had a fever of 101 when I first got sick 3 weeks ago but have had no fever in 2 weeks. I lost 7 pounds initially but have put most of it back on eating high calorie diet. Shouldn't I feel normal by now? Been on Flagyl and Levaquin orally for approximately 2 weeks

Thank you for posting query at HCM.
Its noted that you were diagnosed with Liver Abscess around three weeks ago and you observed considerable improvement since initiation of treatment alongwith decrease in the size of liver abscess in followup radiological examination.
Liver is a very important organ that is involved in a wide variety of body functions including but not limited to : synthesizing protein, synthesizing bile acids, "food metabolism", drug metabolism, removal of toxic substances and so on.
When Liver is damaged due to any cause (liver abscess, hepatitis, etc), these functions are impaired. Patients feels fatigue, weak , malaise and nauseated.
Proper diet and proper rest is very important in liver diseases.
You have strictly followed the diet plan that may have been suggested by your treating surgeon but i also advice you to have Proper REST and carry out less activities during say which includes no or least sports.
Moreover, it is also advised to have a check on
"Liver function Test(liver enzymes)".
further advice:
- NO alcohol and NO beverages
- intake of fresh fruits
- 'LEMONADE drink and sugarcane drink" juice would be very beneficial to make you feel healthy and less nauseated.

Thanks for your response. So you think in my case no matter how small the abscess that remains is I would still feel symptoms of feeling unwell for weeks or months? I just thought that once it was close to gone i would be back to my normal self? Thanks

the abscess was in a vital organ occupying considerable space.
however, you're recovering rapidly which is a very good sign.
Definitely, you would get complete relief once the abscess is completely gone and the liver would return to normal function.
starting from today, most likely within couple of weeks hopefully.
rest properly, and no stress at all.
stress would make the healing process slow.
