Question: Hi Doctor,
When is the most accurate timing to test for HSV-1 and HSV-2?
And what is the most accurate test to do so?
unprotected exposure for both was 25 days ago. Done PCR RNA for other STD all negative.
Only symptom showing is pain/burn in urethra and tingling feeling in anus/penis head. no lesions or sores showing. thanks.

Brief Answer:
Go for 4th generation HIV DUO test after 12 weeks to get conclusive result.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
Ideal time to rule out HIV infection is after the completion of the window period (6-8 weeks, sometimes up to 12 weeks). The ideal test to rule out both HIV 1 and 2 infection is 4th generation HIV DUO test.
If you have urinary symptoms like burning or tingling, rule out urethritis with urine examination. It can be done by now.
