How Effective Is Prednisone In Managing Inflammation?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: Hello! I suffer from what I think is LPR, and I'm having a major flare up. Burning in throat, chest, aching pain, cough, slight wheezing that is clear with cough, belching etc. It is awful. It's acute on chronic, I have burning in my mouth as well. I've tried everything: PPI's, Gaviscon Advance, Non Acid Diet, elevate HOB, weight loss, Carafate, etc.
I'm going to Mexico for a week starting Saturday, wondering if anyone has any suggestions for relief? Also, lot's of mucus and globus sensation in throat.
I'm wondering if a low dose steroid inhaler, or Prednisone could be helpful for the inflammation. I am miserable. Thanks for the input! PS - I've had an EGD that showed mild gastritis and esophagitis about a year ago.

Brief Answer:
Lignocaine and simethicone syrup can be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Better not to take oral steroid (prednisone).
Inhaled steroid can be useful to reduce inflammation.
Oral steroid will actually worsen your reflux, so better to avoid oral prednisone.
You can also try syrup containing lignocaine and simethicone. It is having good role in resistant cases.
Lifestyle modifications is also important like avoidance of stress and tension, avoidance of hot and spicy food, avoidance of large meals etc. Also quit smoking as alcohol if you have these habits.
Prokinetic drugs like levosulperide is also useful along with PPIs.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
