Question: Please let me know on the looping process. Kindly update on the pros and cons of the same. My wife has delivered a baby last month and now we are thinking of avoiding pregnancy for the next 3 to 5 yrs. We are thinking of looping as the suitable alternative. Kindly help.

Brief Answer: EXPLAINED BELOW Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. I think you are referring to the IUD ( intra uterine contraceptive device ) as the ' loop '. It is an excellent method of contraception and for spacing children . IN your case it is an optimum method of birth control. They can be hormonal or copper containing. It can be quickly inserted at a gyneocologist's OPD within a few minutes, your wife needs to feel the strings of the device , specially after each period. Hormonal devices are better ( Mirena is the preferred one in the market ) - they reduce risks of heavy bleeding, pelvic infections, ectopic pregnancy etc. 2 in 1000 women might experience expulsion of the device, some women have heavy menstrual bleed / irregular bleed with the IUD, but Mirena will lead to reduced menstrual bleeding, at times, even absence of a period. With Mirena, mild side effects such as headache, breast tenderness, mood swings might occur, not necessary, and if they do, they go away in a few days time. All said and done, there are no real cons for using the IUD, and it is an ideal contraceptive if your wife is breast feeding, and you wish for protection for atleast 3 - 5 years. All the best Please feel free to discuss further.

Thanks for the prompt response Doctor.. I still had another query in this regard.. My Wife had undergone c-section during her delivery and she is feeding the baby with both mother's milk and Lactogen. Please suggest in using IUD considering the above. Baby is 50 days old.. Regards XXXX

Brief Answer: GOOD FOR BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS Detailed Answer: Thank you for the appreciation, XXXX As I said, the IUD is an excellent choice when the mother is breastfeeding, as it does not have any effect on the milk production by the mother. As she is partially breastfeeding, it is a good choice for her. Take care.
