Question: Hi Doctor, I have been indulged in smokingdrinking from the past 2 years and have now decided to quit. Though drinking has been completely off-board, smoking is yet to quit. Kindly please suggest how to detox the body post quitting and how to clean the beer belly that has been created over the past 2 years.

I appreciate your efforts to stay on the sober path.

Step one to quit smoking is to decide and quit for atleast few days. When you develop confidence, you continue on it. Avoid company of smokers. keep busy with some work.

Step 2 is to use nicotine supplements or e-cigarettes as a replacement of cigarettes. These are easily available in pharmacies.

Step 3 can be try some medicines as prescribed by your doctor that can help with smoking cessation.

Detox post-quiting happens naturally. Intestines and liver tissues replace themselves within a period of time. You can drink a big glass of lime water empty stomach every day. Beer belly improves with regular yoga and exercise.

I would also wish to know how to restore healthy lungs and cardiac function from over the years effects of constant smoking. If this is possible, how? And how to detox the smoking damage

The human body is such that the organs recover on their own with a time period. Only irreversible changes like fibrosis, emphysema, ischemia etc cause problem.

Smoking cessation is the only proven way of slowing down disease progression in COPD and alog with other factors it helps in asthma, CVD (brain and vessels disease).

Following lifestyle measures are used to recover faster:
- Regular exercise on treadmill, suryanamaskar (around 10 - 20 rounds), etc.
- Healthy foods like berries, cherries, leafy greens, fruits, etc. You can make a smoothie of the above in a mixie and drink one glass everyday.
- Breathing exercise with a lung exerciser or as taught in yoga class e.g XXXXXXX XXXXXXX This increases airflow to lungs and body and also reduce "collapsing" of lungs.
