Question: Hello Doctor, My daughter is 3.9 years old and weigh about 14.6 kg. She has been having high fever with temp of 102+ with running nose and cold since last Wednesday 30th Oct. Blood report looks good.I consulted a paediatrician and he says it could be due to seasonal cold and change of weather. Advised Syp Pecef 100 Oral suspension and calpol 250mg for fever.
My question is, as per my understanding pecef (Cefpodoxime) is effective only for bacterial infections and not for common cold or flu. My regular paediatrician always advises Syp Taxim O for UTI or for viral infections caused fever.
Pls suggest Pecef 100 or Taxim O given my baby condition as above stated. I'm a bit worried to give Pecef given its side effects.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Symptoms and blood test suggestive of viral - no need for antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello...Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day.

If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all.

AVOID BOTH CEFPODOXIME AND CEFEXIME AS BOTH ARE ANTIBIOTICS.

Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.
