Does Hypothyroidism Affect Sexual Life And Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: Hi,
I am planning for getting married and recently meet one girl through matrimony. We like each other and both of our families are also happy to proceed. But two years before she was diagnosed as hypothyroidism(under-active thyroid) patient and since then she is taking medicine. Dosage is 100 mg.

How much this disease would affect sex life and pregnancy? Please suggest. May I need to reconsider my decision?

Dont worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Hypothyroidism is common problem experienced by one-fourth of the population..It requires proper monitoring and adjustment of dose 6 monthly..
There is no need to drop the proposal due to this..

Hypothyroidism doesnot affect the sexual life.. If thyroid level is well controlled. it doesnot cause problem in conceiving.. In pregnancy, thyroid level should be monitered every 2 monthly and dose adjusted to prevent fetal hypothyroidism which will be managed by your doctor..

So no need to worry..

Hope i have answered your query.. Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good day..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..

Hypothyroidism if under control is unlikely to cause any disease in future.. T3, T4, TSH at regular 3 monthly check up will be sufficient..

If during pregnancy, thyroid level is well controlled it is unlikely to affect the baby.. Uncontrolled cases can cause fetal hypothyroidism..

Hope I have answered your query.. Good day..

Hi,

Uncontrolled hypothyroidism can cause decrease supply of thyroid hormones to the fetus who solely depend on the mother for this hormone as fetal thyroid develops later in life.. This can cause physical and mental retardation in the newborn.. It has made mandatory to check the thyroid level of the baby on the 3rd day of birth so that any deficiency can be immediately detected and treated before it cause any harm to the baby..
