Does Diverticulitis Cause Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jun 2017
Question: Good afternoon,
My 23 yr old son called me from work complaining of stomach area pain that started yesterday afternoon. Not sick feeling but crampy pain in the stomach area. If he sits still its OK, but if he gets up and moves around it is uncomfortable. He is also complaining of having to poop often, but when he goes to poop, there is not much and there are red blood clots in it. Is this just a case of IBS or something more serious?

Brief Answer:
Bacterial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the query.

Bloody stool is not an IBS symptom for sure. Usually it appears due to bacterial infection, inflammatory bowels disease or diverticulitis.
As he has also stomach pain, bacterial infection seems most probable.
I suggest him to visit a doctor. Stool test and stool culture test should be done at first. Colonoscopy should be considered.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
