Does Sotalol Interact With Indomethacin?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 May 2017
Question: Thanks, doc. I am taking sotalol HCL and xarelto for a PVC ablation performed 2 weeks ago. Woke up tonight with an apparent acute gout flare in R Big Toe. When had first flare in 50 years in XXXXXXX 2016 (L Big Toe), my family doc gave me an Rx of indomethacin for "first onset of any future flare." Are there any serious contraindications between the gout med and the new heart meds? I just took the first Indomethacin and will take 3/day until can call cardiologist Monday. Am I on right course?

Brief Answer:
Yes interaction are there between SOTALOL and Indomethacin

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir

I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that yes there is interaction between SOTALOL and indomethacin as indomethacin decreases the effects of SOTALOL. Also there are chances of increase in potassium levels so careful monitoring is required.

However these effects are more prominent in long term use if both drugs are used together. If you are using it for just few days like 3 - 4 days then it's not gonna effect much. However it's advisable to check your potassium after 3 days of starting indomethacin if goes beyond 5.4 then stop indomethacin.

There also a slight increase in bleeding risk if xarelto is combined with indomethacin.

You can safely wait till Monday for your cardiologist opinion. I hope this information will be helpful.

Kind regards
