Brief Answer:
Finasteride may cause initial shedding

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Initial shedding in response to Finasteride is not an unusual thing to happen. However, not everyone will have this increased shedding.

This is explained based on the fact that the hair growth cycle has 3 phases: Anagen or Growth phase
Catagen or Transition phase
Telogen or Resting phase. The hair is shed after telogen before re-entering the growth phase, this shedding phase is called Exogen.

On starting finasteride, hair follicle gets transformed from Telogen to Anagen phase, so if a higher percentage of hair are in the Telogen phase, transition to anagen will cause telogen hairs to be shed (Exogen) which is manifested as initial increased shedding. This usually lasts a month or two. If it is due to finasteride, it is actually a good sign and indicates that the medicine is working.

I would also suggest you to use topical minoxidil 5% solution, 1 ml twice daily at the scalp skin

and a ketoconazole based shampoo (e.g Nizral 2% is available OTC) for regular use.
