Can Cardio Exercises Cause Low Potassium Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2016
Question: Why do I get pvc's when I change position?

Can eating only 3500 mgs of potassium a day and doing an hour of cardio and sweating (and living in the desert 100+ degrees) cause potassium to be 3.2?

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Yes, potassium levels can decrease from increased sweating.

Besides, the amount of potassium you are taking is a little low based on your age (the daily recommended dose based on your age is 4700mg/day).

When there is a specific condition (like increased sweating) the daily dose of potassium you need increases.

3.2 is just below the normal ranges.

Coming to this point, I would recommend increasing the dose of potassium supplements. A lot of fluid intake would also help avoid dehydration (as you have increased sweating).

Another natural way to do this is take food reach in potassium like: plumes, banana, beans, dark leafy greens, potatoes, squash, yogurt, fish, avocados and mushrooms.

I recommend you to closely monitor your potassium levels.

If even with a higher dose of potassium intake, you potassium levels remain still low, I would recommend performing further tests to investigate for the possible cause (kidney function tests and urine analysis for possible kidney disorders, aldosteron and cortisol plasma levels for possible adrenal gland dysfunction, fasting glucose for diabetes, etc.).

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

My answer as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Yes, you can get ectopic heart beats or PVCs in certain body position or during physical activities, especially when you stand up from sitting or lying position.

They are causes by the activation of sympathetic nervous system. This is a normal physiological response that happens to every normal persons.

These PVCs are not related to these potassium levels, as they are caused by physical activities. (PVCs related to low potassium levels usually occur at silence while resting).

So you have nothing to worry about!

Hope to have clarified some of your uncertainties!

I am at your disposal for further questions whenever you need!

Best wishes,

Brief Answer:
You have nothing to worry about!

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that this is a normal reaction.

You should know that during anxiety or physical activity the sympathetic nervous system is activated thus leading to a load of chatecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) in you body. This causes increased heart rate and even ectopic heart beats or PVCs.

You have nothing to worry as they are not indicative of any serious cardiac disorder. They are quite normal.

The main thing to consider in such case is a better management of anxiety. I recommend consulting with a specialist of this field (psychotherapist, psychiatrist, etc.) which can help you manage better your anxiety.

I would also recommend avoiding caffeine intake, which can trigger these symptoms.

A lot of physical activity (aerobics, recreational sports, walking) can help reduce anxiety.

Yoga and meditation can also be helpful!

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Regards,

Dr. Iliri
