Can Simponi Be Taken With Amoxycillin?
Question: Hi I am on Simponi for RA (was on Methotrexate but too sick so been off it for 2 months or so).
I had an operation in Hospital yesterday and the Surgeon prescribed me Amoxicillyn for 5 days (I had to have a Wisdom tooth removed). My RA Specialists has previously told my Husband and I that no antibiotics have an effect on Simponi/Methotrexate. Yet our friend got very sick taking Antibiotics and had to be hospitalised (he is on Simponi/Methotrexate). It is Saturday in Australia so my Tooth Surgeon is not working, so I have nobody to contact about the Antibiotics and Simponi. All of the literature says Simponi contradicts with Amoxycillin.
What should I do take the Amoxycillin for five days (1x3 times a day, for 5 days, each tablet 500mg)??
Or I also have Augmenton Duo Forte Antibiotics for Sinus Infections from my GP should I get one (I suffer from them having Sinus Tubes of right angles so they don't drain properly, but it have not had an infection since I was on Methotrexate previously, or since I've been on Simponi.
Please what is your advice, in the absence of my Doctors (although they do not know that Simponi may contradict with Antibiotics or Vaccinations etc anyway)??

Good evening.
Well, considering your disease and history and since your friend is already on biologics, it is recommended he takes the course of antibiotics. Amoxillin is an outdated drug as such. We normally don't use it anymore. But if you have augmentin you can continue that. If the patient develops any reaction like rash , itching kindly stop the drug
Augmenting doesn't interact with simponi or methotrexate as we have used it quite extensively. But it is always difficult to predict which antibiotic will cross react with which drug cause it all varies individual to individual. But I would suggest you go for augmenting forte.
Do let me know for more queries..I am available over the weekend till you can meet your doctor.
Also I would suggest to skip one dose of methotrexate to avoid any risk of infection in the tooth. 1 dose won't do any harm to his arthritis.

Yes sure, i would be happy to help you out with whatever i can. Augmentin Duo twice a day would do rather than thrice daily. It also has amoxillin but along with clavulanic acid. Let s hope he tolerates it well
