default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: I was bitten by dog on 26/06/15.HIG was given with rabipur followed by rabipur on 29/06/15.I have just read that rabipur should be given in arm muscle not in buttock as it may lead to vaccine failure. I was given rabipur in buttock. I am too much worried. What should i do. Kindly give advice.

Brief Answer:
You are protected from rabies under following guidelines

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Rabipur is a anti rabies vaccine that is taken in the arm. It is a 5 dose schedule given on day 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 for protection.

2. Human Immune Globulin HIG is given for severe bites and this is followed by anti rabies vaccination like Rabipur.

3. There is no vaccine failure in your case and you are protected by HIG. Please take rest of Rabipur vaccine in the arm.

Hope this answers your query.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

Respected Sir
The dog which has bitten me is untraceable, it has bitten at least 4 people in 2 days. For how much time i am protected by HIG so that anti rabies takes care afterwards.

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The HIG will provide you immediate protection till such time that rabipur generates antibodies. Even if you started rabipur 3 days later then there is no need to worry but you should take full schedule of 5 doses.

2. Since the dog is untraceable therefore good that you took HIG on same day.

3. Rabipur should have been started on same day and taken for 5 doses on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28. This will provide you complete protection.

Hope this answers your query.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
