Can NuvaRing Cause Chemical Burns On Penis During Intercourse?

Posted on Mon, 21 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, my Boyfriend and I were having sex close to a week ago and I left my Neva ring in. About a minute into it he asked if it was in and asked me to take it out because it was hurting his penis. Normally I remove it before having sex because it hurts both of us. After sex he was complaining that his penis hurt really bad and the next day he had an irritated area with little clear blisters near the head. All of the blisters have now popped and there is still a red sore area. Is it possible to get a chemical burn from a nuva ring or and irritation rash?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to physical irritation to the ring or herpesvirus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
I have gone through your history and reviewed the attached photograph.
Nuvaring doesn't lead to chemical burn although the blisters can be due to physical irritation caused by the ring. The other possibility that I can think of by looking at the photograph is herpesvirus infection which is a sexually transmitted disease.
Ask your boyfriend to wash the area with plain water, avoid using soap and continue applying neosporin ointment on the raw red areas.
This will resolve in 5-7 days.
I hope to have answered your query.
I would be happy to clarify any further doubts.

Thank you for that info. Can irritation to that area cause a herpes outbreak? I personally would rule out herpes and think it was an irritation caused by the nuvaring given what took place.

Brief Answer:
Irritation doesn't cause herpes

Detailed Answer:
Most likely it is due to irritation but looking at the presentation herpes could also be a possibility.
Irritation doesn't cause herpes. It can be a coincidental finding.

Ok, thank you. Even though i am not showing any signs or symptoms, im thinking we should both go get tested. Ive been reading a lot about the testing process today and how alot of the tests are inaccurate. We live really close to the university of XXXXXXX and i was told they offer the most accurate test called the western blot. It is a little more expensive compared to others, but was wondering if its worth the money? Are you at all familiar with these tests?

Brief Answer:
Go for ELISA test

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I think you should go for ELISA test. It is quite sensitive and specific and less expensive than western blot. Go for hsv1 IgG and hsv1 IgM and hsv2 IgG and hsv2 IgM.
