Are Nausea And Acidity Side Effects Of Regesterone?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Hi doctor, I started taking regesterone 5 mg to postpone my periods. I am due for my period on 19 September. I started them yesterday. Took one in the morning and one at night. I am feeling nauseous and have acidity too. Is this a side effect of the medicine? If so what can I do to control it?

Brief Answer:
yes these are side effects

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
yes , if you are not keeping yourself hydrated with regesterone twice a day then you are bound to have nausea, dizziness and acidity as well.
Please drink atleast 4-5 litres of water daily as progesterones are known for water retention and hence dehydration can can easily cause these symptoms.

For how long approximately will these symptoms persist? I am going on a holiday and I don't want to feel sick. Will drinking water truly make the side effects abate?

Hello.
Well yes ,this shall take few hours to abate though. In the meantime you may rest and take an antiemetic like tab perinorm 10mg to avoid nausea and an antacid syrup 2tsp stat for acidity relief. You may get it as an otc in XXXXXXX but its better to get it prescribed from your doctor.

Hello.
Are you in a habit of taking any inhalers or beclate or salbutamol puffs? If yes then you should take 2 puffs stat and for acidity just continue on gelucil 2tsp 6 hrly. Due to progesterone effect you may develop some palpitations as well but that can be controlled again with water intake. After 2 days reduce the dose of regestrone to once a day and then continue till you want to avoid your bleeding.

Thanks doctor, yes I do take inhalers and I did. I have genus il tablets. Will that suffice? And you mentioned that for two days I should take regesterone twice, yesterday I took two n today I took 1 . By this evening it will be the second tablet for today, so should I reduce the dose from tomorrow or wait for another two day?

If I take the last tablet on Saturday night, are there chances to bleed before Tuesday evening?

Right after I stop the tablets will these problems go away?

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
you can take gelusil tabs for gastritis.
you should take one tab regesterone from tomorrow till the date you want to delsy your menses. After stopping the drug ,the bleeding shall start within nexy 5 days. There is a possibility that it might start on tues eve after last dose on saturday.
the symptoms shall vanish once you start with your bleed.

Hello again doctor, by reducing the dose of the medication are there chances that I will start bleeding before I want. I am travelling from Saturday and will be back Tuesday night.
Will the symptoms feel better when the dose is reduced?
I should probably tell you that I have PCOD. But my periods are quite regular.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
By reducing the dose here your symptoms shall reduce definitely but its unlikely that the bleeding shall start early as initial dose of progesterone have been high and now you are being maintained on 5mg hence. So if you are returning on tuesday night then you should continue the pill till tuesday and then stop it .
PCOD has no effect on regesterone per se and the withdrawal would anyways be initiated once you stop the drug.

Thanks again doctor. I just want to know if I should take an antibiotic for the asthma so that I feel better. I don't want one that will repress the effect of the regesterone

Detailed Answer:
No, you shouldn't be taking any antibiotic for asthma as its not an infection but an allergic condition. You may use your inhaler 2puffs twice , even thrice a day for relief Antibiotics can easily decrease the efficacy of regesterone and your whole purpose of delay may be lost.

In that case doctor will an antihistamine like Allegra 120 or alerid bring some relief without disturbing the regesterone?

Detailed Answer:
Well the pathology is asthma is allergic bronchoconstriction which can only be relieved with bronchodilation with a brochodilator like salbutamol , which if has betamethasone as a steroid or fluticasone, then steroid themselves are anti-inflammatory and can prevent / reduce the allergic inflammatory reaction, hence puffs would just be one and you need not take an allegra 120 tab, WHICH IS FEXOFENADINE and can lead to sleepiness.

Hi doctor...... It's me again..... An aunt of mine told me about deriphyllin retard for the asthma..... Can I take it? Will it suppress the regesterone? Will I have other side effects?

I want to enjoy my holiday.... So I want to be completely well
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sameer Kumar (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
answered

Detailed Answer:
If your inhaler is not working then you may take deriphyllin retard once a day. But if your asthma is a prime concern then you should meet your pulmonologist as well to get evaluated and review.
Deriphyllin retard can help you over come bronchoconstriction and it should not affect the efficacy of regesterone.
You may take it if you have been prescribed the same as its not available as an off the counter drug.
