Are Isolated PVCs And Heart Palpitations Signs Of Cardiac Disorder?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Apr 2016
Question: I experience isolated PVCs/PACs and have so for years, but recently these palpitations have coincided with exertion like walking up stairs. When I do more strenuous workouts and my heart rate is above 110 or so I don't experience these palpitations but for whatever reason it seems like the relatively minor strain of walking up the steps triggers them. It has occurred maybe three times in the past month (I walk up stairs everyday)- lasts for only a few seconds and is not associated with any syncope/pre-syncope or chest pain. I don't want to schedule an appointment with my cardiologist because this seems relatively minor but I read that palpitations associated with exertion could be a bad sign. As far as tests go I have had numerous ECGs the most recent being two weeks ago, it was normal with the exception of first degree AV block (which I get off and on). I had a holter monitor for 30 days July 2015, a stress test August 2015 with a resting echocardiogram, and I had a stress echo w/ contrast July 2014. All results were normal. Given these test results I am hesitant to make another appointment because it seems like all the tests were fine. Based on this, do I need to worry much about these palpitations?

Brief Answer:
There is nothing to worry about!

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms don't seem to be related to any cardiac disorders.

Your performed tests have shown a normal structure and function. The performed stress test and stress echo which have resulted normal, have excluded possible myocardial ischemia.

From the other had the fact that your symptoms are present during small physical efforts (like walking) and do not appear during straining physical activity, is another argument which excludes any cardiac disorders (myocardial ischemia symptoms are proportional to the level of physical exertion, which is shown by the stress test or stress echo).

So relax and do not worry about it!

Coming to this point, the main cause of your symptoms seems to be just pure anxiety.

I would be happy to review all your performed cardiac tests for another professional opinion!

Hope to have been helpful!

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask me!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
