Are Irregular Pre Ventricular Contractions Normal?

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: I get like one or two PVC(pre ventricular contractions) a day that i can feel. The heart monitor i wore showed the same thing. Doctor said they are not even dangerous nor are they PVCS rather SEV. Whatever that means? What is the difference. Doctor assured me im ok and not to worry. It is scary when i feel them. I feel a sudden drop under my throat that lasts about a second. Is this normal?

Brief Answer:
normal PVC

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns. You have been having frequent palpitations and irregular heart beats. These beats called premature ventricular contractures are very common and normal. Almost everyone has them and they can give you that funny feeling your chest or like a sudden drop in your throat. What happens is the heart contracts a little early then there is a longer pause between heart beats which gives the heart more time to fill with blood. That second beat after the PVC feels real heavy because it is pumping a higher volume of blood with more pressure. It sure feels weird and funny almost like the drop before falling on a roller coaster.

PVCs are common and do not indicate any other heart defect or problem. You may notice them more during times of stress or anxiety. Or after drinking high caffeinated beverages or certain medications that increase your heart rate.

I can reassure you that you are normal and have nothing to worry about

Im getting like 2 of them daily that i can feel. Some days i have none. Is it true that taking magnesium may help?I also take 25mg of atenolol on a split dosis daily. I have some anxiety and i was prescribed the atenolol.

Brief Answer:
Taking atenolol will help

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning with more questions about your PVCs. Taking the atenolol will help reduce your anxiety and help reduce the number of PVCs. Magnesium may also help but not as much as taking the atenolol.

Having 2 PVCs daily is a really low number and should reassure you that your case is minimal.

I can continue to reassure you that your PVCs are minimal and not anything to worry about. You can take magnesium supplements but that may not help as much as taking your atenolol

One last question and im sorry to bother you. Can pvcs become dangerous? I am just really freaked out about them. I had an echocardiogram and it all was normal. Every time i get one though i really freak out badly. I hate it, dont really want to freak out but its come to be my natural response to them. I feel like the more i think about them the more i expect them and get them. Its a vicious cycle .

Brief Answer:
PVC normal

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting me again. PVCs are a normal thing and they do not progress into any dangerous arrythmias or other heart disease.

I think you would do well with relaxation exercises and meditation. The techniques you learn will help you get out of your head and react less to your PVCs. There are several books on anxiety and relaxation exercises. My favorite author is Dr. XXXXXXX Burns. He teaches cognitive behavioral therapy and it is very effective for anxiety and depression.

I hope this helps.

Ok. My doctor also gave me the option of putting me on .25mg of clonazepam twice a day for a month. He says it will help me anxiety a whole lot. Not sure if i should though .

Brief Answer:
Try relaxation first

Detailed Answer:
Using the cognitive behavioral therapy works as well as medication and does not cause addiction. Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine which with regular use can cause addiction.

Using CBT is drug free and can give life long relief of anxiety. Try the CBT first before trying medication

Do you think anxiety can cause pvcs?Im sorry i keep asking and asking but youre the best and fastest doctor that actually takes time to respond. Like can i get more pvcs just by feeling anxious and anticipating them?
doctor

Brief Answer:
Yes anxiety can cause and be exacerbate PVCs

Detailed Answer:
We all get PVCs but people with anxiety may notice them more often. Then with the additional anxiety the PVCs will actually appear to worsen. so yes anxiety does make PVCs worse. By limiting and reducing anxiety the PVCs will decrease and your problem becomes less of an issue. You will be amazed at how much better you will feel once your anxiety gets better controlled.

Good luck
