Are Contraceptive Pills Effective In Treatment Of Bleeding Due To Fibroid?

Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: I have had heavy periods for 14 years now. I was recently diagnosed with a fibroid. My doctor started me on the pill. I took it the first Sunday of my period as directed. I have been bleeding lightly for two weeks. Is this normal. Will the pill help resolve it?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern, though.

Oral contraceptive pills usually stop pain and bleeding produce by fibroid.

They will not bring down the size of fibroids.

Usually treatment of fibroid is surgical (removal of fibroid) - by myomectomy or hysterectomy.

Progestin IUCD and Lupron is also useful in fibroid treatment.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

Hi, Dr. I am still spotting. Going on almost three weeks now. Is this pill going to kick in and stop my period? How long will this take? Do I need something stronger.?

Brief Answer:
Wait for few more days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

If you are spotting and not bleeding, pills start working.

Sometimes it will need time to stop bleeding completely.

You should wait and watch for a few more days, if the spotting continues you can consult your treating physician for the same.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.
