With Labour Contractions, Why Does The Stomach Go Hard?

With labour contractions, where does the stomach go hard?? When I get contractions ATM, (I m sitting up), the top half of my stomach goes ROCK hard, and I get severe period pain lower (in the usual area) and back pain for about 45-60 seconds, which gets more and more intense, then tapers off and goes away. But the bottom of my stomach doesn t seem to get as hard? It does go hard, but not as hard, I know she s quite down (I.e. Head down like she s somehow pushing herself out. I can feel the pressure and pain in my pelvic region/vagina.) Just confused and being a first timer to this I don t want to get myself excited unnecessarily.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
No need to worry until the labor progresses smoothly.
Usually pain wave starts at the fundus of the uterus.
And also uterine musculature will be more thick at the fundal region and that musculature helps in pushing down the fetus.
So possibly because of that there will be more tightening at the top of the uterus.
If the pain and tightness increases further, better to tell to your doctor to rule out rare abnormalities like formation of constriction ring etc.
With progression of labor, the pains increase further and the gap will decrease.
After sufficient cervical dilatation, with progressive labor pains baby will come out.
You can take analgesics to get some relief
Take care.
