Will Taking Clarithromycin During Pregnancy Cause Any Harm To Baby?

Hi. I am currently 27 weeks pregnant. I ahave had a very bad chesty cough for months. Today I was prescribed 250mg of clarithromycin twice a day for 7 days. I have only taken two tablets so far, but read that it shouldn t be taken for ladies who are pregnant. I asked.the doctor at the time if it was safe, which he assured me it is. He also said he was prescribing a very low dose. Is my baby likely to be at risk. I am going to stop taking the tablets, but as it s bank holiday weekend can t see a go until Tuesday. I also have a previous heart condition which I read can be an issue with this antibiotic. Please help. Very concerned about my baby s development. Thank you

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Clarithromycin is categorised as a category C drug to be used in pregnancy, which means it does have certain risks involved that cannot be ruled out. It should only be used once a risk versus benefit is calculated. Please discuss this with your doctor once again or take a second opinion.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
