Why Is The Ovary Not Removed During Total Hysterectomy?
about a year ago had lots abdominal pain, had what I thought was removing of cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. copies of surgical orders and consents read total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo oophorectomy. I have since learned that my ovaries were not removed---still having pain. surgeon states it was my misunderstanding was not suppose to have ovaries removed. does this make sense. can you explain it to me
The meaning of total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo ophorectomy means that both ovaries have to be removed. But you said that these were surgical orders. Please check the surgical procedure if it mentions that the ovaries were removed or not. If the procedure also states the same then it means that a complete procedure had to be performed.
Sometimes we do give orders pre op as well as consent that ovaries will also be removed or for that matter for any procedure to be performed. However sometimes the intra operative findings are such that procedures have to be abandoned or modified due to reasons like advanced disease, adhesions to other organs etc. In that case we do inform the responsible persons like relatives etc about this. We also mention this in the case sheet and discharge cards. So please check if something like this happened.
These are the only possible explanations that I can think of. The best person to provide an answer would be your doctor who performed the surgery.
