Which Treatment Is Best For Abnormal Mammogram At An Old Age?
My mom is 83 and in good health. Today she had an abnormal mammogram and an ultrasound that showed a mass - "lobular" in shape about 2 cm. Radiologist said it would be up to my mom's doctor to decide if she should have a needle biopsy or surgical removal. How does one decide and what kind of questions should my mom be asking?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. If there is an abnormal mammogram and a mass, first investigation would be a needle biopsy. 2. If malignant, staging if necessary and possible treatment depending on the stage can be thought of. 3. If benign, no excision necessary, unless there is pain or any complication. Even if excision done, it will be minor procedure. 4. Ask for FNAC, then depends on whether it is benign or malignant lesion. Then if malignant, lymphnodes are involved or not. Finally prognosis and type of cancer along with staging is important. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
