Frank, a 72-year-old man with suspected colon cancer, underwent a colonoscopy. A large mass was found 12 centimeters proximal to the splenic flexure. In which part of the colon is this located? Trace the route of the colonoscope to the location of the mass.
Basically there are 2 types of intestines in the human body, the large and the small. The stomach opens into the small intestine which opens into the large intestine (broadly called colon) which opens out through the anus. The colon is divided into various parts. Going backwards from the anus upwards is the anus, the rectum, the descending colon, the splenic flexure, the transverse colon, the hepatic flexure, the ascending colon and the cecum. Your disease appears to be in the transverse colon. If the biopsy report comes out as cancer, then you need to get a chest x-ray and CT scan of the abdomen. If the disease has not spread then you should undergo surgery. If it has spread then chemotherapy.
