Hello madam,
I can clearly understand your concern. And I also understand the concerns of your gynaecologist. Let me give you information that can be reassuring to you.
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. All proton pump inhibitors except omeprazole were categorised under category B(usually safe) for pregnancy.
Omeprazole is categorised as category C. More recently there is a change in label of rabeprazole indicating that the pregnancy category is C.
There were some reports of malformation in human fetes with omeprazole but the subsequent studies showed no such risks. The labelling of rabeprazole states that there were some morphological changes in bones in animal studies at higher dosages than human doses given through out pregnancy and lactation. And it doesn't mention about any malformation occurring in any human studies. That means the category was changed to C because of these findings in animal studies. In my opinion, there is very very less chance of any risk caused by rabeprazole to your pregnancy. And I would have advised my patient to stop worrying about rabeprazole and it's effects.
Please undergo all the required tests as suggested by your obstretician/gynaecologist. Hope the above information helps you in dealing with the dilemma. Thank you very much for writing into HealthcareMagic.
