What Prednisone Dose Is Recommended To Keep The PMR Under Control With Minimal Damage To Bones?

I have been suffering from Polymyalgia Rheumatica for 8 years, with three remissions. Currently its been two years without remission in spite of decreasing Prednisone slowly. A current flair found me at 20 mg decreasing to 5mg within three weeks. Felt great on 20, now feel terrible on 4mg daily. What Prednisone dose is recommended to keep the Poly under control with minimal damage to bones. Is 5mg daily considered a relatively safe dose for bone retention over long periods of time? I am currently 75 yrs old, with first Poly in Jan, 2005.

Hello.A daily dose of Prednisone 5mg is a low dose, used over long periods of time can too cause osteoporosis but less intense than with the usual dose of 30 mg or more. Also say you that 5 mg is effective minimal dose for the treatment of Polymyalgia. Overall, the benefits of using 5 mg of prednisone over long periods of time to treat Polymyalgia are greater than the risks.
I wish you good health.
