What Is Trouble In Throat Causing Constant Gulping And Breathlessness?

My 6 year old dr. has allergies and is on flonase and taking zyrtec at night before bed for about 3 weeks now. For about 2 months she has complained that she has trouble swallowing and keeps swallowing and swallowing almost like a gulping contraction in her throat. She complains off and on throughout the day and especially before bedtime. She points to her throat and says there s a bulge and now she feels like the bulge is blocking her breathing a bit and growing upwards. We are making an appointment with ENT tomorrow but I am very concerned about this reoccuring complaint and especially about the breathing and seemingly getting bigger.

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Allergic rhinitis might be associated with some mass within nose most probably polyps within sinuses. Further children do have tonsils and adenoids which adds to the problem causing problem within the throat. She needs thorough examination by an ENT as rightly decided by you.
General advise:
1. Avoid allergens and protect from allergic environment or conditions
2. Use ACs with HEPPA filters and do maintainance regularly
3. Stay away from pets and furry animals, clothes, carpets
4. Use vacuum cleaners at home
5. Use face masks - you need to explain your kid that it will help her more
6. Steam inhalation regularly twice in a day each for 10 mins
7. Continue medicines as advised by your ENT
Next Step:
1. Visit an ENT
2. Imaging of nose, pharynx and sinuses
Probable Action may be advised by your ENT
1. She may need some procedures if any mass lesion within nose or sinuses
2. Doctor may advise you for Tonsil-adenoids removal to prevent recurrent infective episodes if he finds so.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
