Hi,
A hemoglobin level of 5 is extremely low and will affect her well-being. However, if she is of sound mind then she has the right to refuse investigation and treatment.
Ideally she needs extensive investigation and iron supplements and possibly a blood transfusion.
I suggest she could be offered iron supplements and some dietary advice. She would benefit from a healthy and balanced diet. This needs to include iron rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, pulses, iron-enriched cereals, pulses, brown rice and eggs would be a good start.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
