What Is The Treatment For Excessive Phlegm Production?

My 3 month old has had phlem for the last couple months and gasps for air, coughs and sometimes stops breathing for a second or two. He is breastfed and may get a bottle of formula of 4oz. a day at times. This doesn t happen at feeding only it can happen an hour or so after. He even may do this even elevated. Any thoughts to what this can be? Thanks, Nicole

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common among exclusively breastfed infants. Milk makes sputum thick and can lead to thick phlegm.

As a first line management, you can use saline nasal drops for symptomatic relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult a dermatologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
