Deep Vein Thrombosis of the upper extremities. Patient was hospitalized for 6 weeks then sent home on blood thinners and pain meds. It s been months and she is still in horrible pain, continues to loose weight and has diarrhea. Are there hospitals that specialize in this. Thank you
Hi, Deep vein thrombosis of upper limbs is rare and usually termed Effort Thrombosis or Paget Schroetter Syndrome. Your treatment is fine but you should also get the cause evaluated like a fibrous band or a hypertrophied 1st rib leading to Venous Thoracic outlet syndrome. Also, we would like to test whether your blood is Thrombophilic meaning whether it has a tendency to thrombose by running a few blood tests. This is the protocol we follow in our Vascular Surgery Center in India. You can feel free to consult us for any Vascular Surgery query. About diarrhea and weight loss, they seem to be unrelated to the DVT. What medications are you on? Please let me know to guide you further. Also let me know the age, sex of the patient and what all veins are involved as per the Doppler report. You can ask for me via a Specialist query or a Doctor query at this site. Take care, Dr Rishi, New Delhi, India.
