What Is The Right Dosage Of Primolut Recommended To Delay Periods?

I have been prescribed Primolut N to delay my period for 2 weeks due to going travelling! In the past I have taken 1 tablet twice daily (morning and night) however this time my local GP recommended to take 1 tablet 3 times daily (morning, lunch, night). My question is, if I just take the 1 tablet twice daily (morning and night) should it still work?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Primolut N contains Norethisterone, a synthetic analogue of the natural hormone progesterone. Menstrual cycle contains three important phases named as follicular phase, ovulation is considered as a phase and luteal phase. Estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that play main role in regulating the menstrual cycle.

Menstruation is the process of shedding of developed endometrial lining along with its blood vessels. Progesterone is the hormone responsible for development of endometrium. If there is decrease in the progesterone level following failed conception, uterine endometrium starts shedding.

To postpone menstruation maintenance of the progesterone levels. The usual dose should be one table three times a day containing progesterone for maximum of 14 days. There may chances of spotting or bleeding, if the progesterone level falls. So, taking the tablet thrice a day is advisable. Discuss with your gynecologist for further opinion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
