I had been operated for Thyroid because of cold nodule two years ago & left thyroid gland removed. I was initially on thynorm 50 which was increased every three months by 25 mg as my TSH level did not come within prescibed limits. I was on thynorm 112 for six months when TSH was below 1.0 later the dose was again reduced to 75 for six months and TSH is now 14.0. i have increase the dose to 100 on my own pl suggest.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hypothyroidism is due to deficiency of secretion of thyroid hormone from thyroid gland. Levothyroxine (Thyronorm is brand name) is the treatment of choice for hypothyroidism. Serum TSH should be measured to monitor for adequate replacement. TSH can take up to 4 months to normalize. TSH is measured 6–8 weeks after initiation of levothyroxine and then annually once you are on a stable dose of levothyroxine. You need to take levothyroxine for life-long. Any interruption in treatment will cause symptoms of hypothyroidism. Now you are taking under dose. Dose have to increase to bring down serum TSH to normal.
Advice
1.     Thyronorm 100 mcg daily
2.     Investigation – serum TSH after 6 weeks of completing Thyronorm 100 mcg dose
3.     Consult your endocrinologist for follow up management
Thanks

General & Family Physician Dr. Michelle Gibson James's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

AS you realized the higher the TSH, the lower the actual levels of the thyroid hormone are low.

Increasing the thynorm or other thyroid replacement is the normal response for a high TSH.
It would be best to do this with your doctor.

It can take 6 to 8 weeks for any change to occur with the TSH level after a change in dose so you can wait to see if there has been a response.

I hope this helps
