What Is The Cause For Pain In Right Side Under The Rib Cage, That Hurts While Deep Breathing?

My daughter is 10 and has experienced pain on her right side under her rib cage. It hurts worse when she takes a deep breath, a little short of breath, not painful to the touch or certain movements. She said she can breath easier if she lifts were right arm above her head? I do have an appt for her, but unsure what it may be?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the given description, I suspect that the symptoms could be possibly due to muscle catch/pull.

The general treatment guidelines for this condition are as follows -

- Advised Rest and not to involove in any activities that cause pain
- Apply ice or a cold pack to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes, 4 times a day for several days. Wrap the ice or cold pack in a towel. Do not apply the ice directly to your skin.
- Take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help relieve pain
- Use heat only when you are returning to physical activity. Then use it before stretching. Gentle heating can help loosen the muscle
- When the acute pain is gone, start gentle stretching exercises. Stay within pain limits. Hold each stretch for about 10 seconds and repeat 6 times.
- Physical therapy may speed up the recovery process. Therapeutic modalities such as Ultrasound, Gentle massaging with painkiller creams and specific exercises will be helpful.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
