What Is Meaning Of Mild Cerebral Atrophy In Mri?

I had slight numbness on the left side of my body. MRI of brain "Impression" says mild cerebral atrophy. It also says "few tiny foci of T2W/FLAIR hyperintensities" in the periventricular white matter. Is this serious? I am 35, male, 6'1, about 220 pounds

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Mild cerebral atrophy is a condition expected at age above 60 years. At your age this needs to be evaluated with your clinical symptoms. A history of increased alcohol intake and substance abuse may cause aging prematurely. The T2W and FLAIR hyperdensities in the periventricular white matter are also of concern. It is important to know if you are having small vessel ischemic changes. This is a condition where there are small areas in the brain with deficient blood supply. You need to discuss your findings in detail with a neurologist and take appropriate medications. Please also get checked for hypertension and diabetes if present in your family.
