What Does This Blood Test Result For Persistent Back Pain Indicate?

My son has had low back pain for the past 2 months. We took him in to the sports med doctor thinking he strained something... they did an MRI and he had no structural damage. They did find darkened bone marrow and thought possible leukemia. After a blood test.. he had heightened white count.. around 15, low hemoglobin, and a little higher platelets. After a bone marrow check.. he does not have leukemia. However, he is still having back pain, he gets chilled beyond normal occasionally. He is going to be 17 yrs. old on Thursday... we are concerned. Any ideas? I believe his next step is to Rheumatology and another MRI

Dear , This is Dr. S.Tomar from Healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I will be your medical advisor for this question. Thank you for sharing your concern with us and showing trust on us.
Abnormal bone marrow finding on MRI should be further evaluated and should not be ignored . Conditions which are associated with such findings and should be tested include: hemangioma , multiple myeloma or some other form of metastatic tumor . Proper diagnostic tests should be done to rule out any serious issue . Serum protein electrophoresis , serum free light chains , urinalysis for bence jones protein , creatinine , calcium and alkaline phosphatase , liver function tests should be done .
Sometimes such findings are seen as a result of hypoxia in people who are athletes and takes part in long runs like marathon so it should also be kept in mind during evaluation . Reconversion of yellow bone marrow to red bone marrow due to hypoxia can show similar MRI findings .
I would recommend you to consult with your healthcare providers and get the needed tests done to rule out any serious issue .
I wish you good health.
This is my initial response and feel free to contact if you need any further clarification .
